Golden Gate Park Project

live a block from Golden Gate Park and have visited it on a near-daily basis for almost 35 years (as one does when raising kids in a city, not to mention having dogs and a husband who doesn’t want said dogs to sully the backyard garden he so carefully tends.) I love the park, but… You know how you can stop seeing the everyday wonders in your life?

So a few years ago, I set out to learn more about its history and its natural history, to explore the people, the flora and fauna that set its daily rhythm, that together sound its heartbeat. I started a Substack newsletter, 1,017 Acres: Life in the Park, to share all the cool things I was learning.

But it’s also partly an exercise in personal attentiveness. Can I keep coming back to a familiar place with fresh eyes and new appreciation? This feels important at a time in the world, and my own life, when mindsets easily calcify. Sometimes I think my writing on the park may one day coalesce in a book; sometimes I think these somewhat random bi-weekly posts are themselves enough.

Please come explore with me.
